About the Presentation

In this informative talk for those providing services for LGBT older adults, Ms. McPhail will discuss effective ways to increase awareness and empathy about the issues and needs of LGBT older adults and provide concrete suggestions for making services welcoming and inclusive to older adults who are LGBT.

About Karen McPhail

Karen Mullen McPhail, RN, MSN, CDP, the Managing Director of Eldementals LLC, is a professional care manager with over 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She has been working since 2001 as a private Healthcare Consultant, Care Advisor, and Care Manager in the DC Metro area. Her specialty is managing complex care needs and providing concierge-style care management for private clients.

As a care manager and an aging life care professional, she has been educated in the various fields of human services, including case management, psychology and mental health, nursing, pediatrics, and gerontology. She is trained to assess, plan, coordinate, monitor, and provide services for the elderly, those with complex care needs, and their families, with advocacy for older adults being her primary focus.

In addition to other areas, she has served as the Liver Transplant Program Coordinator at the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Senior Transplant Coordinator and Program Administrator for the Department of Transplantation and for Ancillary Services at Georgetown University Hospital; as an Assistant Director of Nursing, a Director of Nursing / Wellness Director, and a VP Special Project Consultant for Manor Care Health Services.

Karen attended Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA (BSN, 1991), George Mason University, Fairfax, VA (MSN, 1996), and Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. (1999, FNP Program). She is a professional member of the Case Management Society of America, the National Association of Case Management, the American Society on Aging, the National Council of Dementia Practitioners, the Aging Life Care Association™ (ALCA), ISTAART through the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), the past President of the George Mason Nursing Alumni Association, a past board member of the National Kidney Foundation, has had program involvement with the WRTC, a past Director and Founder of the Transplant Institute Foundation, Founder and Director of Aging Rainbows, a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honors Society, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Alumni Association, Board member / Restaurant Committee Chair for Dementia Friendly America - Herndon, a Kennedy Center Member, member of Great Falls Friends and Neighbors, Great Falls Citizens Associations, Great Falls Business Women, and has completed certification and credentialing through the Alzheimer’s Association, the National Council of Dementia Practitioners, SAGECare (platinum), as a Clinical Transplant Coordinator and is a National Resource Center for LGBT Aging Education Ambassador.

Mrs. McPhail has served as adjunct faculty at both Georgetown University and George Mason University Nursing Programs. She has been recognized on several occasions for her community service efforts on behalf of her area. She has published work in the Journal of Nursing Administration and other publications, does private healthcare consulting for a variety of corporations, does frequent public speaking engagements, and serves on expert clinician panels, along with speaking at numerous clinical and community focused education programs, is involved in many local charities and service organizations, authors a wellness blog titled "Eldementals™," which is a blog to support those with chronic conditions of all ages, older adults, and their caregivers, is lead blogger for Aging Rainbows for LGBT older adults, participates in frequent podcasts, has been featured on WUSA-9, and in other news publications.
